Harry Redknapp is now the manager of Birmingham City, but he’s commented on Newcastle’s chances of avoiding a relegation battle for the coming season in his column in the Sun.
And the former West Ham and Tottenham manager doesn’t think Newcastle have signed the players they need yet in the transfer window to avoid a relegation fight.
Rafa is still trying to get some class players into the side, and we were hoping that Rafa’s coaching would make us difficult to beat next season even if we don’t get all the players we need.
Certainly, when he came in a year last March, Rafa made Newcastle into a much-improved side after the first four games – once he had time to sort out the players.
So that’s the minimum we are hoping for this season.
This is what Harry’s been writing in the Sun about Newcastle and Rafa Benitez:
“Rafa Benitez doesn’t need my advice as he’s one of the game’s top managers – so he knows the score.”
“Yet we are a month from the close of the transfer window and – for whatever reason – he has not been able to do what he’s aware he has to do to make sure Newcastle do not go back down.”
“That is get in more bodies, and high-quality bodies at that, or you fear it could all go horribly wrong over the next few months.”
“I don’t want to be the prophet of doom for any club, I’ve a lot of mates who are managers in the Prem and I wish them all the very best.”
“But there’s no escaping the fact some are facing a fight to stay up.”
“I’ve identified Watford, Swansea, Southampton, Burnley, Huddersfield, and Brighton as teams that are really going to be up against it.”
“But the seventh of those in danger – Newcastle – is maybe the most surprising for me.”
“To stay up this year, more than in any other year, it is going to be about spending on quality and numbers to get you through.”
“For a club of Newcastle’s size and potential, it has been a worryingly quiet window and Rafa must persuade owner Mike Ashley to part with some more cash.”
“But they seem to get it at Huddersfield. If they are going back down they are making sure it won’t be without trying everything possible to survive.”
“They have already spent money on 10 players, that’s double the number that have arrived at Newcastle, and you have to admire how such a small club is pushing the boat out.”
“But it is not mission impossible for any of the seven clubs – as Sean Dyche has proved at Burnley.”
Harry has said that he thinks Javier Manquillo is the best buy for Newcastle this summer and we cannot believe many fans would agree with that choice.
