Secretary to Treasury Ben Botolo has dismissed the scheduled protest match on Monday by former Malawi Young Pioneers (MYP) combatants, saying real MYPs were disciplined and could not organize protest matches.

    EX- MYP members

Renowned civil rights activist Billy Mayaya has organized the match in the Capital City to force the government expedite the payment of K1.6 billion pension to 2, 600 ex-MYP members.

“These people did a very commendable job when they were in MYP and they need to be paid what is due to them,” said Mayaya.

But Botolo said the government is working round the clock to screen all names to ensure that only the bonafide receive the pension.

Botolo said the ongoing screening of former (MYP has already flushed out some ghost pension claimants.

“We are wondering why these people, who never worked for the MYP, were getting the pension on 14th of each month. We are also wondering why some people, who worked for the MYP, are not receiving their pension,” Botolo said.

The Secretary to Treasury blamed this on the first census of the ex-MYPs done over 10 years ago when some people gave false information to the government in a bid to get ‘Christmas money’.

He said officials from the Treasury and the National Audit Office are working around the clock to assess the file of the claimants and match the information in their databases.
