Infant rescued from mentally ill mother in Karonga

Following publication of a feature story by the Malawi News Agency (Mana) which was also posted on Nyasa Times a few weeks ago about a child being raised by a mentally ill mother in unfriendly environment in Karonga, the child has now been separated from her parent, it has been established.

In the story, it was disclosed that for one year and some months, the baby boy (named Steve) experienced wild life as he had no freedom of movement, he could sleep without eating anything or taking a bath.

It was revealed Steve was staying with her mother, Viwaya, at a guardian shelter for Karonga District Hospital, and that their survival depended on leftovers from in-patients and some guardians at the hospital.

According to some sources at the shelter, Viwaya’s elder sister rescued Steve last Saturday night while she was sleeping.

“It is true that Steve has now been rescued by his aunt (his mother’s elder sister) from Lupembe,” said Margret Mwafulirwa, a guardian from the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kyungu.

On Wednesday, Viwaya was alone, wandering around the hospital premises telling everyone about the ‘missing’ of her child.
Surprisingly, Viwaya is aware that Steve is now staying with her sister.

When we granted her for an interview, she sounded unmoved.

“That child is my biological son, and nobody else can separate us, but since my sister is challenging me, let her pay the costs, we shall see,” she threatened.

It is alleged that Viwaya was raped by unidentified bicycle operator who took advantage of her mental problem, to get pregnant and subsequently have Steve born.

Reports also indicate that the woman was once normal, but allegedly got mad whilst in a polygamous marriage.
