We have been linked in the Portuguese press this summer quite a number of times with Benfica’s 28-year-old Greek International holding midfielder Andreas Samaris.
The latest news was that Newcastle had bid around €15M (£13.4M) for him with his club wanting €20M – and nothing seems to have happened for a couple of weeks.
There is news now in O Jogo that Argentine U20 central midfielder Santiago Ascacíbar from Estudiantes de La Plata will be arriving at the Benfica club soon and when that happens Andreas Samaris can be sold.

That could be good news for Newcastle, but we are also being linked with a number of other players in the last few days in the same positions.
However, that seems consistent with the Chronicle reporting that we are going after a number of targets together – and presumably, the club will decide soon which are the best targets at the right price.
That strategy also gives Newcastle some leveraging power in the market when other clubs know we have alternative players we are also looking at.
Newcastle could have a good chance of signing Samaras for the €15M we have already bid because no other clubs have been interested so far in signing the player – so in that sense, we are in the lead to sign Samaris.
Samaris signed on from Olympiacos four years ago on a five-year contract for a transfer fee of just €10M and with a €45M release clause in his Benfica contract.
Newcastle may be able to get this player in at a third of his release fee.
In the four years he’s been at Benfica Andreas has played 110 games for the Portuguese giants with two goals.
Newcastle seems to be moving closer to signing some of our targets – but wouldn’t it be really great if Rafa can get say two of his top targets through the door this week.
That would be a big relief and then we would have six players in this summer and even on schedule for this transfer window.
Of course, we also have a number of players we have to move out so it’s still going to be very busy through the end of August.
