Archbishop Tarsizio Ziyaye—of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe—celebrates twenty years of episcopate at Maula Cathedral in the Capital Lilongwe tomorrow; and, has described his time serving people and the church as a bishop as “a moment of grace.”

His Grace Ziyaye: I get a lot of inspiration from Psalm 123

Ziyaye, 68, told Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) communications commission that he could not believe he had reached thus far.

“God has given me a golden opportunity,” said Ziyaye, adding: “God has given me an opportunity to have the general view and idea of the Catholic Church in Malawi.”

His journey in the episcopate began in 1992 in Dedza Diocese. He was began as auxiliary bishop.

According to Ziyaye, he has seen it all working for the Church in the country but thanked God for keeping him “in relatively good health.”

“My strength emanates from my motto that is taken from John 8:29, and I get a lot of inspiration from Psalm 123,” he said.

As bishop Ziyaye has for ten years been chairman for the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), chancellor for the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) and chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA).

“For me these are not necessarily achievements but I consider this as a golden opportunity that God helped me to serve and have interaction with people of great profile. I feel humbled,” said His Grace Ziyaye.

Chairperson of the national laity council, Ernest Misomali, described tomorrow’s occasion as “crucial.”

Misomali described Ziyaye as a “hardworking” bishop.

The bishop, Nyasa Times has learnt, is currently taking a leading role in the construction of a 4 000 capacity cathedral at Maula in Lilongwe.

Some of the dignitaries to present during the celebrations include his good friend Archbishop Liborius Ndumbukuti Nasheda of Namibia’s Windhoek Archdiocese, Bishop Mickael Bhasela of Zimbabwe’s Masvingo Diocese and deputy head of the diplomatic mission of the Holy See, Apostolic Nunciature of Zambia and Malawi, Monsignor Andriy Yevchuk.

Vice president Saulosi Chilima will represent President Peter Mutharika.
