Nyasa Big Bullets yesterday cruised to a 2-1 victory over 10-man Silver Strikers in a match marking 53rd Independence Anniversary Celebrations at Bingu National Stadium.

Despite a stampede before kick off that claimed eight lives and left 42 injured (at the time of going to press), the two sides still dished out their best to the satisfaction of the 40 000 spectators.

The victory is Bullets’ first at the venue since the stadium was opened in January this year.

In the 18th minute, Silver goalkeeper Blessings Kameza guided a McFarlen Mgwira corner kick into his own net, gifting Bullets the lead.

Bullets missed an opportunity to double the lead in the 43rd minute after Kameza saved Chiukepo Msowoya’s penalty following a foul in the box on Diverson Mlozi by Silver defender Yunus Sharif,

The Nigerian was eventually red carded by referee Leo Ngoleka.

Bullets finally managed to double the lead through Mlozi who headed in following some dazzling team work from Bernard Chimaimba and Msowoya.

But Silver pulled one back in the 75th minute through Mathews Sibale from a rebound beating Bullets goalkeeper Rabson Chienda after Ghanaian striker Mike Tete hit the post.

Silver coach Lovemore Fazili attributed the loss to the first half red card, saying it was tough to play with one man less.

His counterpart, Elia Kananji, praised his charges for finally getting it right at Bingu National Stadium.

At Chilomoni Stadium in Blantyre, Be Forward Wanderers deposed Red Lions at the summit of the TNM Super League following a 2-0 victory over Blantyre United.

Two goals from Precious Msosa and Yamikani Chester were enough for the Nomads to ascend to the top of the table with 16 points from six games.

The Nomads, who are unbetaen, were in a class of their own as they dominated United who are condemned on position 15 with four points from nine games. n
