Newcastle have been linked with Hull City midfielder Sam Clucas this summer, but certainly not lately.

However there is news in the Mail today that the 26 year-old, who had a good season for Hull last term, is attracting strong interest from Rafa Benitez and Newcastle.

Sam was named Hull’s Player of the Season and he looked a very good player in what was a poor side who were finally relegated after one season in England’s top league.

Maybe Sam is one of the players that Managing Director Lee Charnley hinted to the Fans Forum last Thursday night that Newcastle were close to signing?

There are a number of other Premier League clubs interested in the player including Leicester City, West Brom and Burnley.

The fee of between £8M and £10M quoted by the Mail seems a reasonable fee for a player who looked accomplished last season in a struggling side – especially with today’s daft prices in the transfer market.

Sam started his career as a youth player at Leicester City where he spent six years, before he was released.

He then joined Hereford, Mansfield and Chesterfield in the lower leagues until he was eventually signed two years ago by Hull for just £1.3M from the Spireites.

At Hull City he’s looked a very good player and played 93 times with 9 goals for them.

Maybe while we are trying to sign Sam we should also try to get his team-mate and left-back Andrew Robinson, who is quoted at about the same price as Sam and is said to be another Newcastle target this summer.

£16M for both Sam Clucas and Andrew Robertson would be some great business for Newcastle United.
