Newcastle Transfer Target – It’s Only Make Believe

Rumors spread very quickly on social media and it just takes somebody somewhere to suggest something – anything – and a rumor is born and it can take off.
That’s exactly what happened yesterday as rumors abounded that 32 year-old former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres was on his way to Newcastle.
The word was that Spanish publications Marca and Mundo Deportivo would run with the story today.
32 year-old former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres
Well we checked both publications this morning and guess what?
Nothing about a Newcastle move for the Atletico Madrid striker – talk about being spoilsports.
But that’s also what Newcastle used to do in the old days under Freddy Shepherd – bring in a famous name who was well past his best and it was almost like a trophy signing.
Such was the case in 2004 when Newcastle signed Patrick Kluivert who had been a great striker in his day at Barcelona with 120 goals in 255 appearances.
But he was way past his best when he arrived on Tyneside with Sir Bobby Robson being completely blindsided by the signing – he wanted defenders brought in.
Patrick stayed for just one year on huge wages.
He did have a decent return for us with 13 goals in 37 appearances and he went in to play for Valencia, PSV and Lille before finally retiring from the game.
We don’t think Rafa is in the business of signing players like Fernando who are way past their best – but it does make for a bit of excitement on Twitter.
But as Conway Twitty used to sing back in the very distant past – “It’s Only Make Believe”
That’s still a great song.
